New Hire

Chuck Mauro dreamed big:

As I lay on my bed rereading Byte back issues and thinking about how I could parlay my 6502 knowledge into a summer job at Apple, it occurred to me that I should just call Apple Computer and ask to speak to Woz. It felt like a completely outrageous thing to think, and I almost dismissed the thought out of hand. I still didn’t know him, and I’d doubted he’d remember me from the throngs at the HBCC that wanted to talk to him about his 6502 engineering efforts. And I wasn’t sure at all if I’d ever be allowed to talk to him, but if you want to get ahead in life, you must occasionally take a calculated chance. After all, I had nothing to lose in making the attempt. I called Apple’s main number and asked for Woz. Much to my surprise, he answered the phone, announcing his presence with “Woz here”! I was shocked, thrilled, and initially tongue-tied, but I’d managed to get out my name and the fact that I was a college student and read all his articles, and had even met him briefly at the HBCC. I indicated that I would love to work with him as a summer intern if they had any openings. I was blown away when he told me to come in for an interview! He gave me the date and time to interview with him, and I thanked him profusely and hung up the phone. Wow! I couldn’t believe it was THAT easy!
